WSTU : Youth in Government
Date: Thursdays at 5P (weekly airdate)
Station Personnel: Frank Mezzapelle, WSTU Afternoon Host
Students from the Youth in Government chapters at South Fork High School and Martin County High
School host a weekly hour-long radio show on WSTU Thursdays from 5-6P , “Treasure Coast Forum” .
The students set the topics, focus on local issues like the water problems in the St Lucie River and national
issues—Treasure Coast delegates to both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions called in
with reports for the show. The students take calls & discuss their views with the audience. Some of the
students have expressed interest in a future in journalism, some in law.
WSTU Student PSA Contest

Station Personnel: Mike Thomas, WSTU Morning Show Host and Sports Play-by-Play Announcer
WSTU sponsors a PSA contest among SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco) students in Martin
County. Mike Thomas, WSTU Morning Show Host & Sports Play-by-play announcer, helps coordinate
school contest with Dr. Barry Hummel, MD and Director of Quit Doc Research & Education Foundation.
The students work under direction of Mike Thomas and Dr. Barry Hummel and learn the basics of radio
production. The students write, produce, and voice the PSAs, and the PSAs are presented by the students
on a live radio show. The PSAs also air in sports events for following year on WSTU & WPSL. Entries
this year were from Martin County High School, Murray Middle School and Stuart Middle School. The
entries were judged by the Broadcast Team of the Orlando Magic. Winners were part of a Coaches Corner
Radio Show hosted by Mike Thomas, aired April 14, 2016.
